re: [Week 2] Joining the Kinship

So, you want to join Courserrim? In case you've made it here without reading the information in the Coursera forums, here are a couple steps to follow:

1. Complete the Introduction. We cannot add you into the kin until you pass that point in the main storyline. Be sure to ask here, on the Coursera forums, or on the coursera chat channel in LOTRO (see topic in this forum for details) if you need assistance getting through the early quests.

You will know that you have completed the introduction when you finish the quest "The Assault on Archet" (if you are a man or an hobbit), or the quest "Skorgrím's Tomb" (if you are an elf or a dwarf). At this point, you're character will likely be about level 7 or so. (See the following posts in this thread for more details about the introduction).

2. Speak up. As there will likely be many of you trying to join the kin this week, we need to know you want in so we can add you. Once again, use these forums, the Coursera forums, or most importantly the Coursera chat channel in-game. That's the easiest way for us to add you, since we won't have to check forum posts and hunt you down. ;)

3. Welcome to Courserrim! Congratulations! We'll help lead you through the rest of the course and the in-game events Professor Clayton has planned... as well as a few events of our own! Keep watching the forums and participating in-game to find out more!

Complete the Introduction?

Each of the races starts you out in a special "starter area" where the quests are designed to gradually teach you more about controlling your character and interacting with the world. Each of these concludes with a one-way exit from the starter area. More details are located here in the LOTRO wiki in case you're not sure if you've completed this section (the linked information shows a list of all the quests in each starter area, listed in the order that you will do the quests, so you can see how far you've gotten through the introduction by seeing which quest you are currently doing and seeing where it is in the list)

Your character will exit the area as a level 5 or 6 minimum, but more likely closer to 10 since you'll be exploring and the shortest route out won't be obvious. Other characters, e.g. your future kin, will not be able to come back to the starter area to help you, but we can chat with you if you are having trouble.

Yes, quite true that characters that have left the starter area cannot return to it. However ... :)

Experienced players can still "go back" to the starter area by creating a new character in the appropriate starter area, and even form a fellowship (i.e., an adventuring group) with other new characters. So, in that sense, more experienced players can still accompany new players through the prologue .. it only takes a couple minutes to roll a new character if you aren't too picky about how it looks :)

Also, new players will need to complete the tutorial (which precedes the introduction) by themselves, but the tutorial provides a lot of hand-holding.

I actually have a character parked in the starter area for the specific purpose of helping people if they need it.

Just give me a shout if you do!
