re: Fellowships and Fellowship Tactics

What is a "fellowship?"

In LOTRO, there are some quests and other adventures that you cannot easily accomplish by yourself (for example, because the enemies you encounter may be too numerous or too difficult to fight alone). In the Coursera “Online Games” course, there are two assignments (Thadur and Weathertop) which you will need to group up with other players to complete unless your character is at a high enough level for you to complete the assignment on your own.

Up to six characters can team up temporarily to form a fellowship in order to complete quests as a group. Each character in the fellowship gets credit for completing the quest if the quest is successful.

Forming a fellowship

You can form a fellowship by simply inviting another character or characters to join. For example, if you wanted to invite my character, Briallan, to join you in a fellowship, you would type into the chat window:

        /invite Briallan

When you do this, Briallan would see an invitation pop up on her screen, and she could either accept or refuse to accept the invitation. Once any character accepts your fellowship invitation, the fellowship is formed. You can continue to invite other characters to join your fellowship until your fellowship has reached its maximum size of six. You can chat with other fellowship members on your own fellowship chat channel – you can do this by preceding your chat comments with /f, as in:

         /f Hi Everyone!

Only the other people in your fellowship will see chat comments that are preceded with /f

Fellowship Tactics

In attempting to meet the objectives of whatever quest you are working on, it's often helpful for particular characters to take on specialized roles. The most basic roles in a fellowship are tank, healer and DPS.

Tank: The role of the tank is to get the attention of the enemies, so that the enemies will attack the tank instead of the squishier members of the fellowship. While any class of character can theoretically fill this role, the most effective tanks are classes that can use heavy armor, have the ability to get the attention of enemies (this is known as 'aggro-ing' them), and the ability to self-heal. In LOTRO, typical tanking classes are Guardian and Warden.

Healer: The role of the healer is to use healing skills on the members of the fellowship that take damage due to wounds, or that are suffering the effects or poison, fear or disease. The healer's main job is to heal the tank (who tends to take the most damage), but the healer will also heal other members of the fellowship as much as possible. In LOTRO, typical healing classes are the Minstrel and Runekeeper, as those classes have the most effective skills for healing.

DPS: This is an acronym for damage-per-second. Members of the fellowship who are not taking the role of healer or tank tend to focus on doing as much damage as possible to the enemy. Which enemies the DPS people should concentrate on depends on the situation (more on that below).

Another issue is that fellowship members will typically use the trait line (red, yellow, or blue) that is most appropriate for their role. For example, a Warden class character would typically use the blue trait line if taking on the role of tank, and the yellow trait line if taking on the role of stand-off DPS.

In many cases, especially with larger fellowships, it's a good idea to have a fellowship leader. The fellowship leader can be either tank, healer, or DPS. The fellowship leader is typically someone who has done this adventure before (often, many times before ...) and so can help the other members of the fellowship with advice on such topics as:

  • what tactics to use to complete the quest,
  • which enemies to focus damage on now,
  • which particular tasks which fellowship members should do (for example: someone might need to open a particular gate while the others are doing something else)

A note for future players beyond the course.

In the terminology of the game, "fellowship" means a group of 6 or less.  Any group greater than 6 is referred to as a Raid.  If you are in a raid, note than /f will ONLY speak to the group of 6 (or less) players with you.  Example.  Let's say we have a group of 8 players divided as follows

Group 1: Ashigaru, Bredhe, Lindalosse, Glofinwing, Pinestro, Katemirh

Group 2: Luinori, Malvy

If Malvy types in /f, only Luinori will see it.  To speak to the entire raid, the command to change to Raidchat is /ra (not /r, that's for replying to a /tell)
