re: Week 3: Chicken Run to Rivendell

The in-game (distinction track) assignment for Week 3 for the Coursera "Online Games" course is the Chicken Run to Rivendell!

First, there are four preliminary quests that you should do in order to have available a quest that will give you 2.5 hours to get to Rivendell as a chicken (though, an escorted run will usually take less than an hour). See this post that describes these preliminary quests. If you have not done the four preliminary quests, you should do them before you attempt the run to Rivendell if you expect to succeed :)

Here is the currently scheduled chicken run activity for Landroval this week. Please note that only attempting the run to Rivendell is required for the course; the runs to Tinnundir and Bree are optional quests and are prerequisites for a much longer (optional) chicken quest later in the month for those that want the “Crosser of Roads” title:

Wednesday the 13th at 3pmRivendell Run [it's possible that runs to Tinnundir/Bree may occur at the same time]

Wednesday the 13th at 9pm – Flying the Coop: Tinnundir

Thursday the 14th at 3pm – Flying the Coop: Bree

Thursday the 14th at 8:30pmRivendell Run [it's possible that runs to Tinnundir/Bree may occur at the same time]

Saturday the 16th at 3pmRivendell Run

Sunday the 17th at 3pmRivendell Run

All times are server time (US Eastern Daylight Time)

If none of the listed times for the Rivendell Run work for you, please ask on the coursera chat channel about scheduling a run at some other time (or just doing an unscheduled run). If you need help doing the four preliminary quests, please ask for escorts on the coursera chat channel.

See y'all in Rivendell!

re: Week 3: Chicken Run to Rivendell

I just wanted to remind folk of three things:

1) Yes, there is a Trollshaws/Rivendell run scheduled for Sunday at 3pm servertime.

2) Yes, there is a Trollshaws/Rivendell run scheduled for Saturday at 3pm servertime as well--we just decided on that today, so that's why it's not listed above, but you'll see it in our other Chicken Run Week thread.

3) If you can't make either of those and need a chicken run to Rivendell (or even *shudder* still need to do your Green Eggs so you can run to Rivendell), TELL US ASAP so we can help arrange something in a timely not-so-stressful fashion.  Even though we do not have anything definite for Friday night or all other times that aren't between now and when the assignment is due, that means there's hopefully plenty of time to fit you in somewhere out of what time is left so you can get it done.

Lastly, a minor suggestion for those freaking out because it's that close to assignment time: if you have done your Green Eggs, but can't make the last two runs scheduled for Trollshaws (Rivendell) and feel adventurous, remember your chicken does not have to make it to Rivendell--you just need to try.

A careful chicken with no Tenders has a decent chance of getting to at least Last Bridge, and possibly even the Ford --both of which will make excellent screen shots for the class.  Best to not leave the farm when in game time (not servertime) is afternoon-evening or you most likely will encounter trolls on the road to Rivendell.

Still...who knows?  Despite the stealthed wolves, bow orcs, spear weilding gobs and any manner of other things you didn't realize were too close until they pounce on you (those lynxes!  Ohhhh the nightmares!)--you might even make it all the way to Rivendell!  It has happened.  I don't recommend this for first timers....but if you really have a horrid schedule to work with, and are desperate....it's worth trying.  If you do die along the way, don't forget to snap a screenie before you get sent back to the farm!  Especially if you haven't already taken one along the way.

I still think it's more fun to go with friends though, feathered or not.
