re: Next Band Meetups

In addition to our next regular band meetup (May 11, Sunday at 9PM EDT), I think we need a second band meetup. We need music not only for the Spring Racing Carnival concert, but we need music to play during the Bree Cup as well (which will mostly be country/western, but also some Ben Hur music that the organizer has requested and I am working on). Also, we need to rehearse comedy routines at some point.

So I am proposing we also get together May 10, Saturday at 2PM EDT -- perhaps everyone in the band can't make it, but if a couple people can we can do some more testing / comedy rehearsal). Would this date/time work for some people?

I can be there.

Back home, and safely returned to my normal rut... er... routine.

Ok Great! Hopefully more people can make it as well, but this is enough of a response so that we will plan on doing this (and I will put it on the calendar) -- see you there!

I'll see if I can find my way out of my ginormous tower.

HERE is the link to the ABCs and part assignments for today's band meetup.

Part assignments assume the following musicians will be present: Ashigaru, Krohkur, Rhovanael and Jebbob, Malvy as well as Briallan and her alts. We can adjust this if different people show up.

In addition to music testing, we should prolly discuss the following:

  • costumes for the concert -- can we do Western garb of some sort???
  • are we OK with meeting again on Sunday (tomorrow) to continue testing music, or do we need more time to prepare and fix music?
  • do we need rehearsals or other preparation for the comedy bits?

I have some ABCs coming shortly as well. I don't know if you want me to send them to you directly so you can assign parts, or what? There will be quite a few songs. I've been hard at work!

The costume design is in the works already. I may have it ready to show off tonight, if not probably tomorrow night.

Comedy is a separate issue, and I will organize that so no need to worry about that. We will have some rehearsal time before the show.

If you send me a link to where the songs are, I can add them to the dropbox and assign parts. We already have 20 songs in the list to be tested (in addition to the ones you are working on) so we may not get to everything today (which is fine, since we have another test session scheduled for tomorrow).

Here are the songs. There are some that sound pretty amazing, that I would love to get through tonight if possible. There are also some bluegrass songs that are super short (1-2min) and a few others that sound great, if we have time. I have included a song list so you can know which ones fit into each category.

I think it would be good if we could get through any new stuff today, and leave the ones we went through last time until after we've gone through whatever is new.

Here's some lyrics I put together for one of the songs, I've got a bunch more in the works:

East to the Mountains (to the tune of North to Alaska)

Way out east
Way out east
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Big Danuk left Ered Luin and the mountains that are blue,
With Bâhur Bones, his partner, and brother, Ghuri, too.
They crossed the Bruinen river and found the mithril veins.
Below that misty mountain a little south of the Redhorn Gate.

Big Danuk crossed the majestic mountains to the valleys far below.
He chuckled to his trusty goats as he trod on through the snow.
With the chilly wind a-running wild in the land of the frozen sky,
Danuk Stoneheart was a mighty Dwarf in the year he chose to fly.

Where the tunnels are winding,
Big nuggets they're finding.
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Where the tunnels are winding,
Big nuggets they're finding.
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Way out east
Way out east
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Bâhur turned to Danuk with his bucket of mithril ore,
Said: "Danuk you're a-lookin'at a lonely, lonely Dwarf.
"I'd trade all the mithril that's buried in this land,
"For one small band of gold to place on pretty Kurdi's hand.

"'Cos a Dwarf needs a sweet mate to love him all the time.
"Remember, Danuk, a true love can be so hard to find.
"I'd carve for my Kurdi, a humble honeymoon cave.
"Below that misty mountain a little south of the Redhorn Gate."

Where the tunnels are winding,
Big nuggets they're finding.
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Way out east
Way out east
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Way out east
Way out east
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.
East to the mountains
They're goin' east, to Khazad-dûm.

Here's another one - more coming! :)

Elijah (To the tune of Kawliga)

Elijah was a scarecrow boy out standing in the field.
He fell in love with a hobbit girl from the store across the street.
Elijah just stood there and never let it show,
So she could never answer "yes" or "no."

He always wore his woolen jacket and held a broken stave.
The maiden wore her hair in braids and hoped someday he'd wave.
Elijah, too stubborn to ever show a sign,
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.

Poor ol' Elijah, he never got a kiss.
Poor ol' Elijah, he don't know what he missed.
Is it any wonder that his face was hid?
Elijah, that poor ol' straw-stuffed kid.

And then one day a wealthy customer bought the hobbit maid,
And took her, oh, so far away, but ol' Elijah stayed.
Elijah just stands there as lonely as can be,
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.

Poor ol' Elijah, he never got a kiss.
Poor ol' Elijah, he don't know what he missed.
Is it any wonder that his face was hid?
Elijah, that poor ol' straw-stuffed kid.

I realized the file I have for this one is short a verse, so I'll have to add one to the ABC in the next few days, but for now we have enough to test the song out.

The City Of Edoras (To the tune of City of New Orleans)

Riding for the city Of Edoras
Enedwaith central, foggy morning rain
Fifteen mules and fifteen restless riders
Three rough sellswords; twenty-five sacks of mail
All along the eastbound odyssey - the trail pulls out of Pren Gwydh
And rolls along past houses, farms, and fields
Passing men that have no name, and burnt yards and smoking plains
And the graveyards of the restless oathless wraiths

Good morning, Rohan, how are you?
Say, don't you know me? I'm your native son
I'm on the trail toward the city Of Edoras
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done

Casting dice games with the old man by the fireside
A copper a point - ain't no one keeping score
Pass the canvas bag that holds the bottle
Feel lost hoofbeats rumbling past as you snore
And the sons of broken farmers, and the sons of hired swords
Ride their father's tired mules on through the fields
And the huntsmen as they fall asleep rocking to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the trail is all they feel

Good morning, Rohan, how are you?
Say, don't you know me? I'm your native son
I'm on the trail toward the city Of Edoras
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done

Night time for the city of Edoras
Changing mounts in Snowbourn as she sleeps
Nearly home, and we'll be there by morning
Through the Entwash darkness, rolling down to the sea
But, all the towns and people seem to fade into a bad dream
And the winding trail still ain't heard the news
The sellsword sings his song again - a passenger takes up the refrain
This one's got the disappearing trailhead blues

Good night, Rohan, how are you?
Say, don't you know me? I'm your native son
I'm on the trail toward the city Of Edoras
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done

Looking forward to going thu these, Rho! Though, we need to wait till tomorrow to get to these (today's meetup was 2PM EDT and is over now).

Will plan to test these along with other new and revised songs tomorrow at the usual meetup time (Sunday 9PM EDT).

I thought today's meeting was at 9pm like our other meetings. I don't know how I missed that. So sorry, guys. I could have totally been there, too.

For future reference, if I've said I'll be at a meeting and for some reason I'm not there when it starts, could someone please shoot me a quick email? I can be pretty scatterbrained when it comes to times, as Ashi can attest to, but my email beeps at me and I'll get the message.
