re: Chicken Run Week

The in-game assignment for Week 3 of the course is the Chicken Run to Rivendell (buk buk buKAWWW!)

If you have not yet done any chicken session play yet, there are four preliminary chicken quests that you should do before trying the chicken run to Rivendell. The reason you should do the preliminary quests if that they unlock a chicken quest that will give you a full 2.5 hours to get to Rivendell (though it should take less than an hour with an escort IIRC).

Here is a short FAQ I wrote that describes the basic idea of chicken runs, and it lists the four preliminary quests, and where you can get them.

One you have done the preliminary quests you should try a chicken run to Rivendell. You can try it solo, but the easiest way to make it all the way to Rivendell without getting killed is to join one of the escorted runs (though, to successfully complete the assignment, you don't need to make it all the way to Rivendell, you just need to TRY).

EDIT 4/29/2015:

This thread will likely confuse a few people, since the first few posts relate to the chicken runs from the PREVIOUS session of the "Online Games" course (July - August 2014), while the later posts relate to planning for the CURRENT session of the course (April - June 2015). Once we get a little closer to week 3 of the current session of the course, we will post relevant dates and times for chicken-related activity to the course forums, the news section of this website, and Facebook, and we will send out in-game mail with details as to where to look for information about upcoming chicken run events. In the meantime, please feel free to view and post information about upcoming chicken activity here on this thread.

Here is a shot of our first escorted Chicken Run to Rivendell from my position as rear guard, as we went thru Stock near the beginning of the run; the bears are not attacking the chickens, but in fact belong to two loremasters who were part of the escort. Not sure exactly how many chickens we actually had on the run but I count 13 in this picture.

Sad to say, there were a couple casualties: Chicken Ryanneth succumbed to a Tarkrip arrow in the Lone Lands, and Chicken Malvy was made a meal of by a stealth Lynx on the High Moors as we neared Rivendell. All other chickens and escort made it safely! We have at least two chicken runs on the weekend, so hope to see you then!

Are you going to do more chicken runs? I could't go to that one, and alone I can't get too far :(

Do you have a time and date you would like to go? If so, put it on the calendar (or, let me know when it is, and I will put it on the calendar -- you can reply on this thread or send me a PM or in-game mail if you like). It would be best if you picked a time that didn't conflict with something already on the calendar.

Alternately, just ask on the Coursera chat channel when you are ready to go, and I'm sure you can find an escort or two :)

re: Chicken Run Week

I am trying to plan for Chicken Camp for this year's crop of Green Eggs.

According to the Summer 2014 syllabus, week 3 is Chicken Run to Rivendell week.

Is that the same schedule for this segment?  I can't seem to find an updated syllabus anywhere.

Please let me know, because week 3 isn't far off, and I need to alert folks on our end as to when they might be needed for Chicken Tendering.

We (Bounders/Warders) already have a story night planned for Fryday May 8th at 9p, which I think would be the start of Week 3 if the schedule is the same when your folk need to run to Rivendell.  Fortunately, the Saturday afternoon we don't have anything planned, though Good Deeds (Middle Earth Crafting & Wares) will meet that night at 8p (all times servertime).  I can talk to Miss Lerillos about the possibility of having her folk doing a different sort of Good Deed by Tenderin' that evening if that's the best time slot for your folks.

Please let me know what the schedule is so I can plan accordingly.

Thankies in advance!  I know ya have a lot going on now with new folks coming in droves.

There is no more recent syllabus than the one from last summer; Prof. Clayton has linked to the summer 2014 syllabus from the website for the current course session. So as far as we know, chicken run will still be week 3. Since week 1 starts (Monday) April 27, week 3 will run from (Monday) May 11 to (Sunday) May 17.

So ... this all means that I would expect we'd be doing the chicken run to Rivendell several times during the week May 11 - May 17, especially toward the end of the week. Some people may start doing the introductory chicken quests before that week, but I expect that many will be doing them in the early part of the week May 11 - 17. So it seems that your Friday night (May 8) event would be a good kickoff for our chicken activities, and we can let the new students know about that after they get settled :)

Thankies for the confirmation on dates, that helps me a lot with plans.  I'll let the Bounders and Mootians know the window so folks can start volunteering (themselves or others--*chuckle*.)  I also have some of our Éclair: Second Servings (ESS) folk eagerly awaiting camp as trainees as well.

There is a Fashion show Fryday the 15th at 9pm in Needlehole, and Bree Market is Saturday the 16th.  I won't be able to help on the 15th--I've promised to help with the show--but I think it would be loads of fun to briefly visit the Market on our way to Rivendell on the 16th if a run is scheduled that eve.  (Market usually starts at 9, but this month they started earlier.  I'll check with Miss Lerillos to see what the start time for May's market will be for certain.)

I like the idea of inviting folk to the Story Night as an official kick off, yet I also know some folk would like a chance to do all the Flying the Coop quests for a chance at the Cloak.  I do not know what else you folks have up your scheduling sleeve for Week 2 activities, though.  So with all that in mind--as well as knowing not all folk are on NA time--here is my rough Camp schedule proposal based on the dates you gave me:

Sunday, the 3rd at 2pm- Green Eggs Camp: basic starter quests (Which Laid First, The Early Bird, and The Sky is Falling), which will open all Flying the Coop quests.

Wednesday the 6th at 3pm and 8:30pm- Flying the Coop: Shire & Lone Lands (both runs during both time periods)

Thursday the 7th at 3pm and 8:30p- Flying the Coop: Ered Luin & North Downs (both runs during both time periods)

Fryday the 8th at 9pm- Story Night in Needlehole, Official Kick-Off for Week 3

Sunday, the 10th at 9am and 2pm- Green Eggs Camp  (Hopefully having both times will make it easier for folk to be ready for Rivendell from the 11th onwards.)

Wednesday the 13th at 3pm--Rivendell Run [may be difficult to get enough Chicken Tender escorts--possible Tinnundir/Bree alt]

Wednesday the 13th at 9pm--Flying the Coop: Tinnundir

Thursday the 14th at 3pm--Flying the Coop: Bree

Thursday the 14th at 8:30pm--Rivendell Run [possible Tinnundir/Bree alt]

Fryday the 15th at ?--Rivendell Run (If this works better for folks--I just can't help)

Saturday the 16th at ?--Rivendell Run (We can either try an afternoon, or do the crash the Market evening run)

I could also offer an open Camp on either the afternoon or eve of the 16th (whenever we don't offer the Riv run) for whatever else folk need that's NOT Rivendell.

This leaves Sunday open for a "LAST CHANCE" run, or if everyone has gotten it by then, we can offer another open Camp for whichever else folk need to get their Cloaks.  Of course, we could always try to do a Free Range run on Sunday...but...well, that's just crazy clucking, really.  ;)

Shire/Ered Luin/Lone Lands/North Downs can usually make it okies with a minimum duo Tender escort (and duo only in case a Tender drops connection--one can do it if high enough level to one shot stuff).  Bree and Tinnundir are better with three or more.

Let me know how this sounds so far when ya have some time to think on it.  I don't know what else non-chicken-y you might have scheduled, so there may be conflicts.  These are just my opening suggestions, I'm not married to them-so feel free to say "Nope, nope, ok, nope" etc.  You are free to schedule the other times I haven't, I just have some RP groups during certain times where I won't be able to help, and most of my usual Tenders won't be able to either (the Fashion Show, I know, we'll have a lot of Tenders there.)

I will do a little "Welcome to the World of Chicken" post after we settle on a schedule with some basics about communicating between Chickens and Tenders, a mini chicken RP glossary, as well as a link to the Roz's chicken guide for folks who want the entire lowdown beforehand.  I'll also be posting notices on the Moot sub forum and the ESS thread.  I'm hoping we'll be able to have a Fowl Marshall for all the runs, but I can't guarantee that just yet.

Worth Noting:: I know F2P folks have issues using the chicken version of /world channel or any userchat channels due to the "this character isn't old enough to use this channel" timer to prevent gold spammers from rerolls that is hard for F2P chickens as each session starts the timer again which for all but Free Range runs means they will never be able to use those channels.  I'm not sure how we can work around that other than teaching them to use the ~(name) for tells since chickens can't fellow.  I'll have to double check to make sure F2Ps don't have issues with /regional as well.  I know /emotes and /shout can help if they fall behind /say range as both reach farther than /say, but if they fall way behind those work arounds won't help them.

Sorries for so many words.  I tried to be as brief as clarity seemed to allow.

Daf, that sounds great! Regarding Week 2 activities, the main thing is that the syllabus calls for a "games weekend" at the end of the second week of the course, which would be the weekend of May 9 and 10. We will be scheduling some activities during that weekend, but we haven't yet decided on the exact activities, and the particular dates and times. My best guess is that we might be able to finalize some details for games weekend within a week or so .. things are unusually hectic this weekend and early next week for some of our officers for a variety of reasons, so I can't really give you more detail than that right now :)

I can be a chicken tender Wednesday evenings, possibly Friday evenings, and possibly on Saturdays.  All depends on the week for Fridays and Saturdays.

Sorry about that - I'm having troubles telling which account I'm signed in with.  That was Rayyanya volunteering for Wednesday nights and possibly Friday nights/Saturdays.

Awesome...thank you everyone for being quick to respond.  I know ya'll are crazy busy now.

As long as I know the Week 2 schedule aside from the Sat/Sun is okies, I'll start promoting those as solid for now, and we'll work on the others as time allows.  We might even be able to encourage some early burds or night owls before/after Story Night to play a round of Hiders n' Seekers right there in Needlehole.

You actually made me realize I've never tried the tag areas with a chicken even though I've taken a chicken to Hobnabs to see if they can get on the field.  Tag probably won't work...but it just might too!

Thankies again *hugs to everyone who wants one*

I found out from Miss Lerillos that the new time for Market is 8-10pm, servertime.

By the way, the course forum has opened now, and the syllabus for this session of the course is now available .. it basically just confirms what we've discussed above.

Here is the link to the syllabus for this course session (but, you probably have to be signed up for the course, or be course staff, to access the link).
