re: Barad Guldur 3/28

Barad Guldur is the raid instance set in Mirkwood's sunny and cheerful Dol Guldur area (DG Housing Neighborhood - make it happen, Turbine!).  Umpo of KWL wants the Unwelcome Mat, which is a nightmare to obtain (literally, we believe it drops from the third Challenge chest, which is a terribly difficult fight), so he's first wanting to see it at L65 T2, but we're looking to bring overlevelled characters (the aim is to see the differences, not do an on-level attempt - if you have characters around L65, let us know so we can reserve any loot for them).  Here's a description of what to expect and what the L100 Challenges would be.

Part 1 - The Gauntlet: After the first two enemies comes a gauntlet run up the stairs - aside from the enemies on the stairs waiting to eat our lunch (wargs, Uruks, and goblins), we'll also get a steady stream of enemies from behind.  It's key that the group stay together, as if someone should fall behind and be defeated, there's no real way to backtrack to get them back up.  Usually, the plan is to just deal with the wargs and Uruks and drag the goblins along, picking them off with any AoE attacks.  At the top of the stairs, after mopping the stragglers up and defeating the final two enemies at the top, the gauntlet ends and you set up for the first boss.

Boss 1 - Durchest: Durchest is usually positioned in the middle of a wall to eliminate Line-of-Sight issues (since there are several inanimate soldiers in the room who can get in your way.  He has an AoE attack that builds a stacking perceived threat debuff, so usually two tanks will get on either side of him and play ping-pong with their force taunts to let the debuff expire.  During the fight, he will call in 5 soldier adds one at a time, and the rest of the group must kill them off when they come in before turning their attention back to Durchest.  However, every time a soldier is killed, Durchest gets some new attack (this may be a fire distributive, or more Fears, for example).  There are also some distributive damage attacks employed, so the group needs to stick close together, and any Fear effects need to be removed (bring some Fear potions, especially if you're not a Guardian or Warden).  If a player dies during the fight, Durchest will acquire a buff called Soul Reap, which he will consume when he gets low on morale for a nice heal.

Challenge 1 - The Ten Guards: In addition to the five guards he will call in on his own, there are 5 levers in the room which, when pulled, will summon in an additional soldier.  Like the 5 that get called in naturally, these guards will also give Durchest extra powers.  The challenge is to defeat all ten soldiers (the 5 from the levers and the 5 normally in the fight) before killing Durchest.

Part 2 - Wargs Are Not Fun: The approach to the second boss involves lots of wargs and sorcerers.  They are usually linked, and the Wargs are stealthed.  Unless you want to spend some TP on store trackers, do yourself a favor and bring some Hunters.  The sorcerers will also cast Fears, which need to be removed, and will put puddles down.  Don't stand in the puddles, it will not go well for you.  Guards similar to the ones seen during the Gauntlet and Durchest fight will also be scattered throughout the tower.  Some rooms will have  bunch of wights, who are slow but really hurt.  Playing keepaway is your friend, try not to go toe-to-toe with them.

Boss 2 - Cargaraf and Morgaraf, The Twins of Fire and Shadow: The Twins are at opposite sides of the second boss chamber.  Morgaraf does not like it when you stay away from him, and Cargaraf hates it when you come in close ("Away with you!"), so the group will be divided into melee and ranged damage, with the ranged attacking Cargaraf.  If you find a blue eye on you, you need to break off from your target and get to a wall so that the puddle that forms won't drop on the rest of the raid.  If someone in the Morgaraf group gets a yellow eye, they also need to back away so they don't drop a large attack on the rest of the melee group.  Healers will stand between the two groups to be able to heal both sides.

Challenge 2 - Two With One Blow: Turbine's favorite challenge, killing the two bosses within 10 seconds of each other.  Listen for someone calling to halt DPS or not.

Part 3 - Going to the Top: Main enemies in this third area are the soldiers you've come to know and love and the Guldur-lights, who can drop annoying fears that make you turn and run.  When fighting Lights, make sure you're in a position such that, if you DO get feared, you won't run right into the next pull.  There will also be a Wight battle.  Keep going up, stay together, and you'll reach the top of the tower with the final boss.

Boss 3 - The Lieutenant of Dol Guldur:  First, LMs will be your friend, because the Lieutenant inflicts a permanent incurable -90% ICPR debuff.  Second, the Lieutenant has a corruption that will inflict a stacking debuff on players.  Dispelling his corruption will cause it to cycle to another debuff, while the first will expire with time.  Because of this, players need to be very careful about dispelling corruptions off the Lieutenant, and should avoid it unless told to do so.  Third, if any players die during this fight, the Lieutenant will summon an add.

Now to the actual fight.  The Lieutenant will appear mounted on his fell-beast.  Periodically, he will put a yellow eye on someone, which is a signal to his beast to snack on them.  If you have a yellow eye, DROP EVERYTHING AND RUN to the edge of the arena and then in a circle until the eye drops off.  Fears must be removed (the seeds of doubt in your heart).  Periodically, the Lieutenant will soar up and come back down, leaving a puddle in his wake.

After dealing a certain amount of damage to him, he will dismount and you will have both enemies at once (the Lieutenant and his steed).  They can be killed in either order, with one caveat.  The steed will still want to eat you, so the rule about turning and running if you have the yellow eye remains in effect.  I think this may be where the corruptions come into play, since the Lieutenant is not himself a targetable enemy until he dismounts.

Challenge 3 - The Lieutenant and his Steed: For the Challenge, the Lieutenant has to die first when he dismounts.  With his rotating corruption debuff, his mount, and the harsh price of players dying, this is NOT EASY AT ALL.  I've been in groups full of veteran raiders who completed the other two challenges, and tried 7 or 8 times to complete the Lieutenant's challenge with no success until we decided to just forego the challenge and kill the mount first because it was getting late and we just wanted to get the non-challenge loot before logging out.

For defeating all the bosses, you will earn 5 TP and some medallions for completing the deed A Game of Death.  Each L100 Challenge is also worth 10 points and Medallions for their deeds.  Completing all L100 Challenges will earn you TP, Medallions, and the title Bane of the Lieutenant.

I'd love to come along for BG. It's a fun run and I've also always wanted that welcome mat. Although if it's already spoken for I won't roll on it.

I've got it on my calendar, if you've got room for me.

Hi Rho!

This raid is being organized by Umpo of the Knights of the White Lady. He told me recently that he is still looking for people to fill the roster for this event. Anyone who would like to go should contact him directly (his alts are Rokkin and Celugraen). Hope to see to you there!
